CAPE TOWN — A Cape Town media-technology company has launched a free artificial-intelligence toolkit aimed at helping community newspapers and neighbourhood businesses produce consistent local news, following a R25 million funding round closed this month.

The platform, called PulseNet, is being rolled out across selected Western Cape publications as a pilot before a wider South African release in 2027.

Free Tools for Community Newsrooms

Community journalism in the Western Cape has been under financial pressure for years, with several suburban newspapers closing or merging. PulseNet offers automated rewriting of verified source material, localisation for specific towns, and social-media distribution — functions that usually require full-time staff.

AcmeLabs says its tools are free for community publications for the first year, funded partly by the recent investment round led by a Cape Town-based venture syndicate.

A Second Shot for Neighbourhood Businesses

Local businesses can use the same engine to produce consistent, genuinely useful community content rather than generic advertising — a format that increasingly defines effective local marketing in the region.

The Local Angle

Western Cape small businesses spend a disproportionate share of their budgets on marketing that fails to reach nearby customers. Free, practical storytelling tools may meaningfully lower that barrier — especially in peri-urban areas where professional agencies are priced out.

Early pilot participants include two community weekly titles in the northern suburbs; the company plans to report results next quarter.
